Job Summary
The job requires measurements of several analytes and biological markers from human samples of blood, urine, and respiratory fluids in single plex ELISA assays and multiplex assays. The work requires protein assays (ELISA, MAGPIX, and ELLA) for a large number of plasma samples from critically ill patients. These experiments are conducted with independence, careful techniques are critical for the studies of multiple COVID-and non-COVID focused clinical trials. In addition, this job involves receiving, labelling, and maintaining an inventory of the clinical samples from various studies.

The job also includes with investigators to carry out mouse studies and measure proteins and other analytes from these studies.

In addition to the scientific responsibilities, the SRA2 will carry out preventative maintenance on all machines and tools, assures that the lab passes all routine inspections, provides aid to any member or collaborator of the Matthay lab and is responsible for the quality and organization of data for multiple clinical trials, trains new lab members on relevant assays, is responsible for the upkeep and health of eight -80C freezers and their contents.

The administrative component requires skill in working well with fellows and investigators to order supplies for the studies from several different grants.

The primary mission of the Cardiovascular Research Institute, the largest organized research unit on the San Francisco campus, is to promote fundamental and clinical research on the cardiovascular and pulmonary respiratory systems and to provide opportunities for postdoctoral training in these fields. With over 200 faculty, staff, and postdoctoral fellows, the CVRI supports faculty from a variety of departments (Medicine, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Lab Medicine, Pediatrics, Anatomy, Anesthesia, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Physiology, Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology). The total extramural funding is $34 million annually (direct and indirect costs), with $1M in indirect cost return, and $561K in State funds. Assets include $38 million in endowment income and gifts, $3M in clinical reserves, and $5.8M in opportunity funds.
Required Qualifications
  • BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Experience with MS Excel, Access, Word
  • Experience with ELISA assays
  • Experience managing inventory and/or large data sets in a professional setting
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with laboratory assays especially ELISAs and multiplex assays
  • Tissue culture
  • Experience with human samples
  • Experience managing a biorepository
